Peter Rabbit Food Allergy Aftermath

The recently released Peter Rabbit the film has become an unlikely source of controversy due to a scene incorrectly portraying food allergies. Many parents have since spoken out and are encouraging the boycott of the film.

In the live-action animated film, a team of playful rabbits hatches a plan to sneak into farmer Tom McGregor’s garden. The rabbits toss fruits and vegetables at the farmer before they manage to throw a blackberry – to which he is allergic – into his mouth. Mr. McGregor immediately goes into anaphylactic shock and has difficulty injecting himself with an EpiPen. The rabbits would then have applauded.

In an open letter, the President and CEO of the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America, Kenneth Mendez, wrote“Shedding light on this condition hurts our members because it encourages the public not to take the risk of allergic reactions seriously, and this cavalier attitude can cause them to act in a way that puts an allergic person at risk. “

Following the influx of critics, Sony Pictures released a joint statement with the filmmakers apologize for the scene. “Food allergies are a serious problem. Our film should not have shed light on Peter Rabbit‘s arch nemesis, Mr. McGregor, being allergic to blackberries, even in a cartoonish and slapstick manner,” the statement said. “We sincerely regret that we are not more aware and responsive to this issue, and we sincerely apologize.”
