Fabien Frankel spent seven months on the House of the Dragon sex scene

Fabien Frankel, who plays Ser Criston Cole, took seven months to prepare for his sex scene in House of the Dragon.

Much like Game of Thrones – albeit more tasteful, so far – House of the Dragon has a bit of sex, whether it’s Daemon and Rhaenyra visiting a house of pleasure, Alicent staring at the ceiling with Viserys, or Daemon and Mysaria.

However, one of the show’s most pivotal scenes so far was the sex scene between Rhaenyra and Criston Cole, her chosen Kingsguard who broke his oath and “soiled his white coat” to be with her.

While Game of Thrones was often criticized for its handling of such scenes, seen as a spark in the deployment of intimacy coordinators, Frankel wanted to make sure it wasn’t “gratuitous”.

Fabien Frankel wanted House of the Dragon’s sex scene to feel “human”

During an appearance on Entertainment Weekly’s West of Westeros podcast, the actor opened up about the scene and how he was inspired by Normal People, along with Daisy Edgar-Jones and Paul Mescal.

“It’s something we talked about for seven months. It was one of the first things I really wanted to talk about,” Frankel said.

Fabien Frankel did not want the sex scene to be “gratuitous”.

“We were incredibly lucky that Episode 4 was directed by Clare Kilner, who I think is one of the great directors working on television today. The most important thing to me was that it didn’t look like not to another gratuitous sex scene, which shone with sweat on your back, because it’s just not like that.

“Anyone who’s ever had sex will tell you that sex isn’t so beautiful. It’s not something quaint, amazing. It’s embarrassing, especially when you’re young. There’s an discomfort to sit in, and there’s a discovery and understanding of each other’s bodies – not to mention the practicality of it all.

Frankel then praised Normal People for “highlighting the realities of sex”, saying: “I just remember the text exchanges, the phone calls, the exchanges between Clare, myself, Milly and our coordinator of the ‘privacy. But especially me, Clare and Milly who were like, ‘How can we make this human?’ »

House of the Dragon Episode 6 will be available September 25 in the US and September 26 in the UK.
