Christmas lights trail at Ushaw Historic House near Durham

One of the North East’s top tourist attractions promises to light up Christmas with the return of a popular festive light trail, featuring ambitious new outdoor artwork by regional artists.

Illuminating Ushaw: Land of Enchantment will take visitors on a captivating journey around the Historic House, Chapels and Gardens of Ushaw, a 500-acre country estate, historic house, park and gardens on the outskirts of the city ​​of Durham.

The grand Georgian country house, gardens and prestigious St Cuthbert’s Chapel will all be illuminated and brought to life with festive music, choir singing and creative light installations on select weekends in December.

Lucy Jenkins, Director of Culture and Heritage at Ushaw Historic House, said: “Ushaw is thrilled to reveal new art commissions and creative partnerships for its third Illuminating Ushaw Christmas Light Experience.

“This year’s theme is Land of Enchantment and we are thrilled to exhibit new work by Northeastern artists celebrating the mystery and beauty of our natural world as well as the magical feelings of joy that the holiday season brings. .”

Highlights of Illuminating Ushaw: Land of Enchantment include a mesmerizing dome filled with twinkling stars, each individually designed by local school children, an illuminated garden of floating flower heads, a vast pulsing network of mycelium – the elaborate root structures mushrooms and mushrooms. – and a huge sculpture of a rabbit in metal and willow; using techniques that date back almost five thousand years.

St Cuthbert’s, Ushaw’s most famous Gothic chapel, will also be decorated and illuminated from floor to ceiling, for the first time ever, creating a spectacular focal point for the hour-long route.

Choirs and musicians will perform Christmas carols in the iconic chapel at different times throughout the evening.

Festive scenes on the Shining Path include:

  • Santa Claus at the controls of his sleigh projected over the grove of yew trees in Ushaw
  • Christmas music as visitors move through the hour-long route
  • Seasonal Selfie Station – opportunity to take selfies with loved ones with the historic illuminated Ushaw House as a backdrop

  • Friday, Saturday and Sunday December 16, 17 and 18

Tickets cost between £10 and £12, booking is essential. Event times are 4:30-6:30 p.m. and the trail closes at 8 p.m.
