An eventful fusion of the best attributes of GoT – Cinema express
A large table, which doubles as a map of all the kingdom’s landmarks and many iconic houses, adorns a room in Dragonstone. We’ve seen this table used by Stannis Baratheon, Daenerys Targaryen, and even Jon Snow in game of thrones. Dragon Houseset hundreds of years before the events of game of thrones, reveals that the same table was used by Daenerys’ ancestor, Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emma D’Arcy). When Rhaenyra’s claim to the throne is challenged by her best friend turned enemy, Alicent Hightower (Olivia Cooke), she argues with her people about what can be done. As per tradition with their Targaryen blood a pyre is lit under the table making it orange and to us it symbolizes how the realm will never be the same when war breaks out and dragons rain down on the land and its inhabitants with fire. Such symbolisms, allusions to the fate of the house and references to the stories we know from the past and the parallels with the first release of its franchise make HOT a worthy prequel Obtained.
Showrunners: Ryan J Condal and Miguel Sapochnik

Obtained, despite becoming a global phenomenon, took its own toll in its eighth season, leaving fans with a bitter aftertaste. Unsurprisingly, this bitterness extended to the first episodes of HOT and the fact that it introduces us to a host of new characters who are slow to register their presence doesn’t make it any easier. But once the series finds its footing, we feel like one of the inhabitants of the Seven Kingdoms who were united by the Targaryen conquest 100 years ago. The success of this series can be attributed to the fact that HOT relied more heavily on George R. R. Martin’s novel than on its predecessor’s later seasons, especially the final season. The creators were keen to keep the writer closer and he even gets an executive producer credit.
Remember how Daenerys Targaryen rebuilt her house’s name from the rubble Obtained? HOTD updates us on the genesis of a series of events – with the Civil War of Targaryen Succession as the main focus – that culminates in the fall of the Great House. Whereas Obtained lasts only six to seven years, HOTThe timeline of spans almost three decades – from the coronation of Viserys (Paddy Considine) until his death, which sparks unrest in the kingdom as the family splits in two and their two heads fall out the throne for their side. It’s safe to say that HOT covers a lot more ground in a short period of time and unlike Obtained where the characters age with each passing season, the spin-off resorts to recasting actors for different timelines.
Beneath the plot that stays true to the heart of Obtainedthis is how the women of HOT stand up to the age-old patriarchal organization of a male inheriting the land. In one of the many parallels the series throws at us, Princess Rhaenys Targaryen, who was meant to succeed King Jaehaerys I Targaryen as ruler of the Seven Kingdoms, is passed over in favor of her younger cousin Viserys due to her gender. But Viserys later crowns his daughter Rhaenyra as his successor only for the plot to thicken when her best friend Alicent ends up marrying Viserys and giving birth to sons to contest the claim to the throne.
Obtained, despite having a host of dominant male characters, ended up becoming a series of events orchestrated mostly by its women. Cersei wanted the Lannisters to rule the kingdoms while Daenerys returned for what once belonged to her ancestors. Sansa puts the Starks back on the map as Arya kills the Night King. Likewise, it is Alicent and Rhaenyra, two women with completely opposite backgrounds, beliefs and ideologies, who pull the strings that lead to the events of HOT. Rhaenyra, who is aware of her royal blood and the rights and responsibilities that come with it, is a free-spirited, independent person while Alicent is a God-fearing daughter of Ser Otto who happens to be the Hand of the King. Beginning as pawns for men to hustle, the two grow into strong individuals who learn the ropes, recognize the strings that puppet them, cut them, take them as reins, and steer each other as they begin to play the game. game of thrones. Nor is it the villainous Cersei who enjoys the power or Daenerys who has something to prove. Nor is it Sansa who suffered like the rabbit among wolves and dragons, nor Arya who wouldn’t think twice before killing someone. They’re just two friends who end up possessing the personalities their fathers forced upon them, to do the same to their children, all in the name of survival and claiming what they believe to be theirs. It reminded me of a line from Obtained by Cercei to Eddard Stark who says, “When you play Game of Thrones, you win or you die.”
Brilliant performance is the cornerstone of HOT. While Cooke and D’Arcy show all the way, succeeding with the style befitting the power their characters enjoy, it’s Paddy Considine who plays Viserys, the link between the two characters, who steals the show with a stellar performance. Not far behind is the eccentric but ferocious demon played by Doctor Who fame Matt Smith, who scores in every scene containing him. What is certain is the fact that HOT is sure to be a strong contender for the upcoming Emmys. Smaller details like Alicent’s biting demeanor, the use of the colors green and black to signify both sides, and the rats being a metaphor for the fall of the big house make for well-written characters and sequences. The references to the Song of Ice and Fire the prophecy and the prince that was promised will definitely be a treat for GoT fans. sex and violence, which Obtained have instead become infamous for, are made up of multiple folds, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t non-existent. The time jumps, while helpful in keeping the plot tight and racy, felt jarring and felt like holes left intentionally for later spin-off series to fill in. The supporting characters and the brilliant writing that brought them to life were some of the Obtained‘s greatest advantages. But here, the racy storyline leaves us with very little time to invest in them and it’s hard to even register their names in our minds even after watching an entire season.
Generally Dragon House is an excellent prequel that encompasses the essence of game of thrones and get the ball rolling. The second season might not be released until 2024 and that’s definitely a long wait. But given the developments of the first season and the way minor changes from the novel have already been implemented, plenty of surprises are sure to be in store, even for those who have read the books. Team Alicent has the upper hand, as her son has been crowned the new king and they command the majority of the houses. Team Rhaenyra might have the army to defend Dragonstone but not enough to lead a conquest. But unlike the other side which only has three dragons, Rhaenyra has over a dozen and if there is anything we have learned from Obtained, everything can happen. All we can do now is keep calm and wait for the dragon dance because the game of thrones has officially begun.
